Liver Scan & Hepatic Diagnostics

A clinically supervised assessment combining hepatic ultrasound and FibroScan to image your liver, quantify fat accumulation, and detect early fibrosis — before symptoms develop.

The liver is a silent organ. Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is now estimated to affect around one in three adults in the UK, often with no symptoms and completely normal routine markers. Fat accumulation and early fibrosis can progress quietly, long before meaningful dysfunction appears. At Reborne Longevity, results are interpreted the same day and integrated into your wider health programme. We recommend a yearly scan to monitor liver health and catch any changes early.

Why Liver Health Matters

What Your Liver Tells You

Your liver is one of the most metabolically active organs in the body — regulating blood sugar, metabolising hormones, producing bile, and filtering everything you absorb. When it begins to accumulate fat or scar, those processes degrade silently and progressively.

Unlike standard blood tests, which can remain entirely normal even in the presence of significant fatty liver disease and early scarring, imaging allows our clinicians to see directly what is happening within the organ. Results are contextualised against your full metabolic blood panel, body composition data, hormonal profile, and lifestyle history — providing a truly personalised and actionable clinical picture.

How the Procedure Works

Hepatic ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to visualise the liver’s size, texture, surface, and surrounding structures in real time. FibroScan transient elastography uses a gentle mechanical pulse to measure how stiff the liver tissue is — the primary indicator of fibrosis — and simultaneously quantifies fat infiltration using the Controlled Attenuation Parameter (CAP) score.

The two techniques are complementary: ultrasound provides qualitative architecture, FibroScan delivers quantitative measurements. Together they produce a complete, objective assessment of the liver in under 30 minutes — without radiation, needles, or recovery time.

What to Expect

Each appointment lasts 30–45 minutes. The ultrasound is entirely painless — a gel-covered probe passed gently over your abdomen. The FibroScan adds only a mild, brief vibration against the skin of your right side. A 3-hour fast before your appointment is requested for the FibroScan component to ensure accuracy.

Results are reviewed by the clinical team and discussed with you in full on the same day — with a clear written interpretation and a recommended next step where relevant. Our team will advise on any preparation specific to your individual assessment before your appointment.

Diagnostic Findings

What a Liver Scan Measures

A liver scan at Reborne produces clinical findings across six domains — each relevant not only to liver health, but to your wider metabolic, cardiovascular, and longevity profile.

  • Measured using the CAP (Controlled Attenuation Parameter) score and graded S0 to S3. Even grade S1 carries clinical significance — independently associated with insulin resistance, elevated triglycerides, and increased cardiovascular risk long before any symptom appears.

  • Staged F0 through F4 via the Liver Stiffness Measurement in kPa. Stages F1 and F2 are largely reversible with the right interventions — making early detection critical. F3 and F4 carry significantly greater clinical implications and require a different management approach.

  • Real-time ultrasound visualisation of the liver’s echogenicity, surface contour, and size, along with any focal lesions — including cysts, haemangiomas, or solid masses that may require further investigation.

  • Doppler assessment of blood flow direction and velocity in the portal vein and hepatic veins — among the earliest detectable signs of portal hypertension as fibrosis progresses.

  • Assessment of the gallbladder and biliary tree for stones, polyps, ductal dilatation, and biliary dyskinesia — conditions that are frequently overlooked as contributors to hormonal disruption and metabolic imbalance.

  • The CAP score is precise and reproducible — designed to change measurably as the liver responds to intervention. A lower score at a follow-up scan is objective, quantitative evidence that the treatment protocol is working, without the need for invasive testing.

Is a Liver Scan Right for Me?

A liver scan is a medically supervised diagnostic appropriate for a wide range of individuals — from those on a longevity programme seeking a complete metabolic baseline, to anyone with raised liver enzymes, metabolic risk factors, hormonal conditions, or a history of alcohol use that warrants investigation.

We recommend having a liver scan yearly to ensure your liver health is monitored, any changes are caught early, and your clinical team can track the impact of lifestyle, nutritional, or medical interventions over time.
